NC State University is committed to educating, supporting, and honoring student veterans and their families by helping them acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals.

We provide a variety of programs and services to:

  • Discharged and retired veterans
  • Active duty military
  • Members of the National Guard and Reserve Components
  • Spouses and dependents of military and veterans
  • Gold Star family members

Our goal is to enable our military-affiliated students to succeed as they:

  1. Transition from the military to the campus,
  2. Persist to graduation, and
  3. Transition from the campus to the civilian workforce.

Unit Objectives and Outcomes: 

  • Military-affiliated students will successfully navigate and access programs, services, and resources to enhance their campus experience and ensure overall success and persistence
  • Military-affiliated students will participate in co-curricular activities that support their educational and life goals
  • Military-affiliated students will establish meaningful relationships and support networks leading to a greater sense of community and belonging


In 2016, the Military and Veteran Resource Center opened in the fall to provide a one-stop-shop for military-connected students to get information about campus resources such as academic support, housing, health care or simply to make connections with others from similar backgrounds. Today, we continue to expand our efforts across campus and in the community. 



  • Military and Veteran Services Ambassadors – student-held position within each college  
  • Military and Veteran Summit – fall open house for all new students
  • Student Professional Development Fund – financial support for student co-curricular activities 
  • Challenge Coin Initiative – to honor outstanding military-connected allies
  • SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society– to recognize outstanding academic achievements 
  • Spring Open House – to welcome all incoming and transfer students
  • Student Veteran Association – student organization for veterans
  • Graduation Recognition and Celebration – hosted in the fall and spring semesters
  • Military Appreciation Games and events – coordinated with NC State Athletics
  • VA Workstudy Program – student employment opportunity open to those receiving benefits
  • Veteran Alumni Socials – hosted each term to connect current students and alumni
  • Green Zone training – Military cultural competency training designed for faculty and staff 


  • In the 2019-2020 academic year, we served 2,318 military-connected students
    • 856 self-identified military veterans
    • 1,462 self-identified dependents (military spouse or child) 
  • 51 programs and events with over 2,100 participants/interactions
